Community Convening to Address Impacts of Industrial Dairies

November 4 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm CST

In recent years, the size of a large dairy operation in SD has grown from 700 head of cattle to upwards of 5,000– 10,000– or even 25,000! That’s a lot of cows, which is a lot of manure, and a lot of wear on our roads. As many politicians proclaim this as ‘economic development’, this unchecked growth is squeezing out South Dakota family farms. Meanwhile, SD has lost 75% of our dairy farmers in the last 20 years. It is impossible to compete against the corporate giants in this consolidated industry. Before it’s too late, we must come together as neighbors to address the impacts of this consolidation on our community.

Do you live near one of these huge consolidated dairies? Have you noticed a decline in road quality and safety, air quality, or have concerns about your well? Come share your concerns and questions with others in your community. Together we will learn from each other, and learn about what we can do to protect our land, air, water, and way of life against the harms of this industrial scale of production.

This public event is hosted by community leaders of Dakota Rural Action. We are standing up for our values of community, stewardship, and respect. We believe that there are better options of economic development for our community that invest in local people, family farms, and our next generation. Join us in realizing that plan for South Dakota!
