ACTION ALERT

Chapter members protest at a Powertech Uranium Corp presentation in Custer on May 22, 2013

Powertech Uranium Inc – a foreign company – is moving ahead with plans to open a uranium mine in the southern Black Hills. The proposed Dewey-Burdock project covers 17,800 acres west of Hot Springs and is an extension of the Edgemont mine from the 1950’s. Dakota Rural Action and the Black Hills Chapter are concerned about the proposed in-situ uranium mining operation because of the unprecedented consumption of water and possible contamination that would affect South Dakota agriculture, tourism, and public health.

Please sign our petition to SD Tourism Secretary James Hagen demanding that he take a stand against the mine and protect South Dakota’s reputation as a tourist destination. We need your signature by June 30, 2013 so we can deliver it before the crucial water permit hearing in Rapid City in October.

South Dakota depends on tourist dollars for 27,000 jobs and 19% of its tax revenue. We don’t need a proposed uranium mining to tarnish South Dakota’s status as a world-class tourist destination, over a handful of risky, temporary mining construction jobs. If Powertech’s water permit application is accepted, the mine will use up vast amounts of groundwater, pollute important aquifers, and likely spread toxic, radioactive materials across the Black Hills. Who would want to take a vacation in that setting?

Take a stand today by signing our petition urging Mr. Hagen to help defend the beautiful Black Hills’ and Badlands’ reputation as a world-class scenic attraction and outdoor recreation destination.

Many thanks for your time and concern. If you have questions about uranium mining, check out this Fact Sheet by the Black Hills Chapter.
